If you purchased the Mo Head Large TBF version, we would recommend a 10/0 or 11/0. We pre-rigged that lure with our 11/0 MUSTAD 7691S on 20' of 530 Xtra Hard. However if you prefer a smaller hook profile, the 10/0 in the Sta-Stuk shown above, or the 10/0 Super Ocean. Both Fudo hooksets are a longer version of a 10/0 so they would work on the Mo Head Chugger Bilfish Foundation edition lure as well.

How do the lance differ from the regular long-shank trolling hooks?

The Fathom Trolling Lance hook has a larger profile and a thicker wire gauge used for all types of trolling lures / hooksets where you are not using bait (however, this has become a favorite hook for swordfish rigging due to its strong thick wire). The long shank ballyhoo hooks are overall smaller and used for rigging ballyhoo. The thin wire of the Ballyhoo hook allows for easier rigging of bait without the damage that would be caused by a larger wire gauge. See attached image of a 9/0 Trolling Lance with a 9/0 Long Shank Ballyhoo Hook.

Typically most dredges are pulled at standard trolling speeds of 5-10knts. NOTE: the faster you go, you will need to increase the size of the coasted fish weight to keep the dredge from coming up and breaking the surface.

Typically with a dredge of this size we would recommend at-least an 8lbs fish weight, however depending on sea conditions and trolling speed, a 10lbs may be preferred.
